ITA426H1: Special Topics in Italian Studies/ Working with Pre-Modern Italian Texts: From Transcription to Translation/ Prof. K. Eisenbichler.
This is an experiential learning course that will be structured and conducted as a workshop. In the fall of 2019, the course will focus on early modern editions of sacre rappresentazioni (religious plays) in order to discuss and practise transcribing from sixteenth and early seventeenth-century published texts, translating such texts into English, and providing a critical apparatus for the translations (introduction, bibliography, footnotes). The course will begin with a discussion of early modern Italian handwriting (paleography), type-faces, scribal abbreviations, grammar, and vocabulary; it will then turn into an experiential learning workshop that will see graduate and senior undergraduate students work together to transcribe early modern Italian texts into modern notation, translate them into English, and then create a scholarly apparatus to accompany their English translation.

ITA431H1: History of the Italian Language I (from Middle Ages to Cinquecento)
This course consists of a historical overview of Italian Language, from the first Medieval documents to the texts of the Questione della lingua. The first part of this course also deals with both the historical grammar (the linguistic transition from Latin to Italo-Romance) and the analysis of early Italian texts. The course will also include an introduction to the techniques pertaining to notions of linguistics’ statistics. Empirical quantitative methods will be based on the three most important databases for Old Italian: TLIO (Tesoro della Lingua Italiana delle Origini), OVI (Opera del Vocabolario Italiano) and BIZ (Biblioteca Italiana Zanichelli).

ITA432H1 History of the Italian Language II (from Cinquecento to the Contemporary Age)
A continuation of ITA 431H, this course examines the evolution of the Italian Language from the debates of the Questione della lingua to issue pertaining to the Contemporary Age, via not only a close reading of the literary and not literary documents but also through analyses of the social, political and economical situations which influenced the formation of the Early modern, Modern, and Contemporary Italian.
