An overview of Italian cinema from its early days to the present, which also offers a survey of Italian 20th century history and culture. This course examines the impact of the theatrical works of Feo Belcari, Lorenzo de’ Medici, Machiavelli, Ariosto and others in the development of theatre in 15th and 16th century Italy. This course includes a component designed to enhance students’ research experience.

ITA420H1: Spinning a Tale: The Italian Short Story from Boccaccio to Basile

The short story genre and its development from the Middle Ages to the Baroque. In addition to Boccaccio’s tales, included are some of the most famous stories of Western literature, which later inspired masterpieces in all art forms, such as Romeo and Juliet, Othello, and  Puss in Boots. This course includes a component designed to enhance students’ research experience.

ITA426H1: Special Topics in Italian Studies/ Working with Pre-Modern Italian Texts: From Transcription to Translation/ Prof. K. Eisenbichler.

This is an experiential learning course that will be structured and conducted as a workshop. In the fall of 2019, the course will focus on early modern editions of sacre rappresentazioni (religious plays) in order to discuss and practise transcribing from sixteenth and early seventeenth-century published texts, translating such texts into English, and providing a critical apparatus for the translations (introduction, bibliography, footnotes). The course will begin with a discussion of early modern Italian handwriting (paleography), type-faces, scribal abbreviations, grammar, and vocabulary; it will then turn into an experiential learning workshop that will see graduate and senior undergraduate students work together to transcribe early modern Italian texts into modern notation, translate them into English, and then create a scholarly apparatus to accompany their English translation.

ITA431H1: History of the Italian Language I (from Middle Ages to Cinquecento)

This course consists of a historical overview of Italian Language, from the first Medieval documents to the texts of the Questione della lingua. The first part of this course also deals with both the historical grammar (the linguistic transition from Latin to Italo-Romance) and the analysis of early Italian texts. The course will also include an introduction to the techniques pertaining to notions of linguistics’ statistics. Empirical quantitative methods will be based on the three most important databases for Old Italian: TLIO (Tesoro della Lingua Italiana delle Origini), OVI (Opera del Vocabolario Italiano) and BIZ (Biblioteca Italiana Zanichelli).

ITA432H1 History of the Italian Language II (from Cinquecento to the Contemporary Age)

A continuation of ITA 431H, this course examines the evolution of the Italian Language from the debates of the Questione della lingua to issue pertaining to the Contemporary Age, via not only a close reading of the literary and not literary documents but also through analyses of the social, political and economical situations which influenced the formation of the Early modern, Modern, and Contemporary Italian. This course will also include an introduction to the techniques pertaining to notions of linguistics’ statistics. Empirical quantitative methods will be based on the three most important databases for the Early modern, Modern, and Contemporary Italian: Vocabolario della Crusca (online), BaDIP (Banca Dati dell’Italiano Parlato) and BIZ (Biblioteca Italiana Zanichelli).

ITA436H1: Man and Society from the Renaissance to the  Enlightenment

A study of the different concepts of man and his place in society, as exemplified in Italian literature from the late 15th to the 18th century. This course includes a component designed to enhance students’ research experience.

ITA441H1: Italian Novel into Film: Aspects of Cinematic Adaption 

An analysis of the process of adaptation in an exploration of the ideological and narratological perspectives as well as the stylistic elements of literary and cinematic discourse. Selections include novels by Verga, Tomasi di Lampedusa, Moravia, Bassani and their filmic adaptations by directors such as Visconti, De Sica, Bertolucci. This course includes a component designed to enhance students’ research experience. ITA460Y1: Internship in Italian

Students enrolled in an Italian Studies Program will have the opportunity to apply their acquired knowledge in the program of studies in a work placement environment. The work placement will take place in local community organizations, corporations, private business organizations, and local media. Applicants will be asked to include a letter of interest. Deadline for applications March 1st, with letter of interest.
Prerequisite: student must be enrolled in 4th year and completed a 300 series language course or ITA 371Y1; GPA requirement; interview by the Department. Final decision will be based on academic qualifications and interview.

 

ITA470H1: Galileo and the Scientific Revolution in Renaissance Italy

Focusing on Galileo Galilei, this course examines the development of the language of science in Renaissance Italy using a variety of tools such as literary and scientific texts, overheads, multimedia programs, and the Internet. This course includes a component designed to enhance students’ research experience.
