About the Siena (Italy) Program
The University of Toronto Summer Program in Siena was established in 1972 in co-operation with the University of Siena which agreed to host a summer program of Italian and Fine Art Studies. Responsibility for the Siena program became part of the mandate of Woodsworth College when the college was founded in 1974. Over the past years, numerous students from across Canada have participated in the program.
In addition to the Summer Program, other links have brought the two universities closer together. In 1982 the University of Siena-University of Toronto Exchange Fellowship was established. This fellowship allows one student from each institution to attend the other for one year. Woodsworth College has also provided support at the University of Toronto for a visiting professor from the University of Siena.
This summer the program runs from Friday, July 25 to Saturday, August 30, 2014 (5 weeks). The Italian courses offered in Siena are:
ITA102Y0 Practical Italian
A course specifically designed for students who wish to take Italian as a breadth requirement. Emphasis will be given to basic aspects of communication in a functional context. This course cannot be used towards any Minor, Major or Specialist program in Italian. Students may use this first year introductory level course to satisfy their breadth requirement while enjoying a wonderful learning experience abroad, the one that only language and culture immersion can provide.
This course includes excursions to Assisi, Lago Trasimeno, Perugia, Pienza, Montalcino, Sant’Antimo, Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano, Volterra and Monteriggioni.
Prerequisites: NONE
Exclusion: 4U Italian or any previous university level Italian language course
This is a Humanities course; BR=1.

ITA358Y1/359Y0 Modern Italian Culture
Analysis of selected philosophical, artistic, musical and literary works which range from the end of the Renaissance to the present. The main topics of discussion include the Baroque, Romanticism, Italian Unification, Theatre, Opera, Futurism, Fascism, Neorealism, Regionalism and Industrial Growth. Field trips and screening of films are included. This course is taught in English and is open to students from other disciplines. Students who wish to obtain credit in ITA359Y0 (instead of ITA358Y0) will be required to do course readings in Italian.
